Background of the study
Alumni associations have emerged as vital contributors to the development of educational institutions by leveraging the experiences, networks, and resources of former students (Hassan, 2023). In Bursari LGA, Yobe State, secondary schools are increasingly recognizing the potential of these associations to drive infrastructural, academic, and social development. Alumni groups often provide mentorship, financial support, and networking opportunities that can complement government efforts in improving educational quality. Recent literature indicates that active alumni engagement can significantly enhance school programs and stimulate community involvement (Sani & Musa, 2024). Moreover, the collective expertise of alumni can help bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical applications in school curricula. However, challenges such as organizational constraints, communication gaps, and limited interaction between alumni and current school administration persist (Abubakar, 2025). The integration of alumni contributions is particularly important in regions where educational funding is constrained and schools struggle to meet infrastructural needs. This study will explore how alumni associations in Bursari LGA contribute to school development by examining their roles in improving academic facilities, supporting extracurricular activities, and influencing policy decisions. The background of this study lies in the need to understand how sustained alumni engagement can complement formal educational strategies to foster a more vibrant and resourceful learning environment. By evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of current alumni programs, the study aims to provide actionable insights that can enhance their effectiveness. The research also considers the cultural and economic factors that may affect alumni participation and the sustainability of such initiatives, thereby contributing to a nuanced understanding of alumni associations in the context of secondary school development (Hassan, 2023; Sani & Musa, 2024; Abubakar, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite the recognized benefits of alumni involvement, many secondary schools in Bursari LGA continue to experience limited support from their alumni associations. There appears to be a disconnect between the potential resources available through alumni networks and the actual contributions made toward school development (Hassan, 2023). This gap is manifested in inadequate infrastructural improvements, insufficient academic support, and a general lack of organized mentorship programs. The existing literature indicates that while alumni associations can play a transformative role, organizational challenges and weak communication channels hinder their effectiveness (Sani & Musa, 2024). Additionally, there is scant research specifically examining the direct impact of alumni contributions on secondary school development in this region. Consequently, the problem remains that without a systematic assessment of the role and effectiveness of these associations, schools may miss critical opportunities for development. Furthermore, inconsistent engagement and lack of formalized structures within alumni organizations have led to sporadic and unsustained support for school programs (Abubakar, 2025). This study intends to identify the factors that limit alumni effectiveness and propose strategies to better harness their potential in driving school development.

Research Hypotheses
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it sheds light on the often-underestimated role of alumni associations in fostering school development in Bursari LGA. The research findings will provide insights into how alumni can be better integrated into the development strategies of secondary schools, thereby improving educational infrastructure, academic programs, and student support systems. The study also highlights challenges that need to be addressed, offering recommendations for policymakers, school administrators, and alumni groups to collaborate effectively (Hassan, 2023; Sani & Musa, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to assessing the role of alumni associations in secondary school development within Bursari LGA, Yobe State. It exclusively examines alumni contributions and does not consider other forms of external support.
